Greymatter

Greymatter is a great blogging tool to use. It is fast and easy to install as well as easy to use. To see a preview of what exactly you will be installing refer to the pictures below. The 1st picture is what your entry pages will look like, and the 2nd is what your comments page will look like.

As you can see I have already customized this for you so it would save you time. Therefore the gm-templates.cgi CANNOT be redistributed, as well as the emoticons because they are mine as well. Good luck and have fun with your new blogging tool!

Before we start you MUST have CGI support on your site, if you are not sure you have it ask your host.

Download this file.

Login to your FTP and either make a folder in your root directory or your cgi-bin and name it gm. The reason why you can do either is because sometimes it won't work for people who put it in their cgi-bin.

Make another folder in your root directory and name it emoticons, CHMOD it to 777. Inside the download that I provided there is a folder inside it named emoticons. These are your smilies. Upload all the smilies to this folder.

Now go to your gm folder and open it, upload all the files in the you downloaded in ASCII mode EXCEPT the emoticons.

CHMOD gm.cgi, gm-comments.cgi, gm-karma.cgi, gm-upload.cgi, to 755.

CHMOD the rest of your files (with the exception of the gm-icon.gif) to 666.

Make a folder inside your gm and name it archives and CHMOD it to 777.

Now we can login in to your greymatter. Depending on what folder you uploaded it to try one of the below URL's in your browser.

http://yoursite.com/cgi-bin/gm/gm.cgi
http://yoursite.com/gm/gm.cgi

The username and password is...

username - urban
password - glam

You are now brought to a menu like setup. First thing you have to do is change the username and password to something you will know and remember. Hit the yellow button that says Edit Authors. Select urban and hit the button Edit Selected Author. You will come to a page will lots of slots. You only have to change the first 4 slots, when you are done hit Save Changes To Author. Now hit the yellow button that's says Configuration. You are brought to a page with lots of slots and boxes. You will need to edit the first 7, they look like the picture below, simple enter in the right paths and URL's to your greymatter, you can leave the emoticons alone though.

Scroll down a bit and find these 2 big boxes. One is for Email Options and one is for Emoticon Options. If you want to receive emails when someone comments on your entries enter in your email address. And also check off both in the emoticons options to allow emoticons in your greymatter.

The rest of the stuff in config. you don't have to change but you can if you want to.

Scroll all the way down and hit Save Configuration. You are now brought back to the main menu. Hit the Configuration button again, scroll all the way down and hit the Diagnostics & Repair button.

Select Perform Diagnostics & Repair. When it is done select go back to the main menu.

Now you can add your very first entry. Hit the green button at the top that says Add New Entry. Type in your subject and your message or whatever you wish to put, when you are done scroll down and hit Add This Entry.

Hit Visit Your Site and see your newly added entry!

Whenever you want to add entries simply go to URL you typed in and hit Add New Entry.

If you ever want to hide entries, so they won't show on your site anymore simply go the main menu, hit Edit An Entry.
